In an interview, Soffy Dombernowsky, co-founder of Studio About, shared insights into the philosophy and creative process behind their innovative designs. Founded in 2018, Studio About is a Danish design company born from the unique collaboration between Dombernowsky, a photographer, and Mikkel Lang Mikkelsen, an architect. This fusion of backgrounds creates a distinctive design approach that combines architectural precision with artistic flair. “We founded Studio About out of a desire to create functional and aesthetic objects that challenge conventional design norms,” Dombernowsky explains.
By focusing on minimalism and experimentation, Studio About has carved a niche in the design world. Their philosophy revolves around creating designs that are both simple and innovative, aiming to inspire “a more colorful and experimental life.” Dombernowsky emphasizes the importance of material selection in their process: “We prioritize high-quality, sustainable materials that complement our minimalist aesthetic. Whether it’s glass, metal, or other materials, each is chosen for its durability, beauty, and ability to enhance the overall design.” This commitment to quality and sustainability sets Studio About apart in a crowded design market.
The studio’s latest products, the FLOAT poufs and WAVE candle holders are perfect examples of their unique design approach. The FLOAT poufs were inspired by merging comfort with sculptural aesthetics. “We wanted to create pieces that are both comfortable and sculptural, serving as statement pieces in any space,” Dombernowsky notes. On the other hand, the WAVE candle holders play with light and shadow to transform any setting. “We wanted to create designs that not only hold candles but also add a decorative element to the space through their form and material,” she adds.
Looking forward, Studio About is excited to continue exploring new design categories and push the boundaries of what’s possible, with upcoming collaborations and projects that focus on sustainability and innovation. “What keeps us going is the unrelenting curiosity and the joy of transforming abstract ideas into tangible, beautiful products that enhance everyday life,” Dombernowsky says, hinting at a future full of creative possibilities.
