District Eight, a standout Vietnamese design furniture brand founded in 2010, draws deep inspiration from the rich cultural tapestry of Sài Gòn. The brand pays homage to its beginnings with a name reflecting its original factory location in one of the city’s districts. Known for its blend of Eastern and Western influences, District Eight creates furniture that harmoniously combines traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.
Their latest venture, a collaboration with the Milan-based studio studioutte, has resulted in the striking LIMEN collection. This partnership, sparked by a mutual appreciation for understated elegance and cultural nuance, led to the development of a collection that is both simple and profound. The LIMEN tables, described by studioutte as “an homage to a radical timeless elegance, suspended between Orientalism and a minimalistic approach,” are crafted to integrate into elevated interior settings seamlessly.
The design process for LIMEN involved a deep exploration of materials and form. According to studioutte, “LIMEN is a collection that is developed on the concept of portal, simple shapes and their stratification. The cultured anonymous expressiveness is mitigated by the presence of metal elements as the only ‘non-detail’ and ignited by the choice of padouk, an exotic wood with a very recognizable expressiveness.” This approach highlights their dedication to blending refined exotic wood with raw metal inserts, creating pieces that are both sturdy and aesthetically striking.
The versatility and timelessness of the LIMEN collection are central to its design philosophy. studioutte describes this approach as ‘precise anonymity,’ emphasizing a sober and muted aesthetic. This design principle allows the LIMEN tables to seamlessly integrate into diverse settings, whether minimalist or maximalist, enhancing their surroundings without overpowering them. The collection’s ability to fit into varied environments speaks to its refined elegance and adaptability.
District Eight’s Creative Director – Darren Chew elaborated on the collaborative process, stating, “We were inspired by historic architecture—thinking about how things were built to last and serve a purpose. The LIMEN collection ended up being this homage to elegant, timeless design, blending minimalism with a touch of the East. They’re exactly what we strive for at District Eight—innovative, quality pieces that stand out yet feel right at home within our aesthetic.”
The production journey at District Eight is characterized by a meticulous balance of artisanal skill and modern manufacturing. Their factories, specializing in metal, wood, and upholstery, ensure that each piece undergoes rigorous crafting standards. From concept to completion, each piece reflects District Eight’s commitment to quality and sustainability. As they continue to grow, the brand remains dedicated to pushing the boundaries of design, fostering collaborations that celebrate the richness of Asian craftsmanship on a global scale.
