In a design landscape hungry for fresh thinking, Juslin Maunula stands out by redefining how discarded textiles can be repurposed. The Helsinki-based studio, founded by fashion designer Laura Juslin and architect Lilli Maunula, has carved a niche by merging avant-garde aesthetics with sustainable practices, resulting in products that breathe new life into forgotten materials.
Juslin Maunula’s reputation is built on its distinctive visual language, characterized by bold color combinations, rich textures, and a touch of surrealism. Their creative approach transcends traditional boundaries, making waves in both the fashion and design industries. The duo’s accolades, including the Finnish Young Designer of the Year award in 2022 and a long list mention in the Dezeen Awards Emerging Studio category, underscore their impact and potential for further expansion. They recently showcased at 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen at the prestigious location Frederiksgade 1, further cementing their position in the design world.
The “Jumble” collection epitomizes Juslin Maunula’s philosophy. By reimagining surplus textiles into a diverse range of products—from floor puffs and bolsters to trench coats and pouches—the collection addresses textile waste with creativity and refinement. Each piece in “Jumble” starts as an unsold surplus roll from Italy, the UK, or Scandinavia, transformed through meticulous design into limited-edition items. The process is as thoughtful as it is forward-thinking, with materials dictating the availability of products, ensuring each piece’s uniqueness.
The sustainability of their production is highlighted by the thoughtful sourcing and use of materials. All items are crafted in the EU, with inner cushions made in Finland and Estonia. The floor pouf, for example, is filled with 100% recycled foam from Finland, while bolsters are stuffed with natural buckwheat hulls, and cushions with a mix of down and recycled PET bottles. This commitment to sustainable materials extends to the manufacturing process, where every fabric scrap is utilized to its fullest potential.
Juslin Maunula’s portfolio also includes interior projects, showcasing their versatility and ability to create cohesive, aesthetically pleasing environments. Their latest offerings debuted at Helsinki Design Week 2023, in collaboration with Finnish furniture icon Artek. Through their ongoing journey, Juslin Maunula continues to challenge and inspire, crafting a narrative of reinvention that resonates globally.
