Founded in 2023 by Luisa Pöpsel and Moritz Pitrowski, Obscure Objects is a Berlin-based collaborative design practice that reimagines materiality and form. Combining Luisa’s architectural expertise and Moritz’s background in product and social design, the duo focuses on creating holistic experiences across collectible design, product design, interiors, and architecture. Their approach emphasizes unconventional techniques and joy in the unexpected, resulting in works that push the boundaries of contemporary design.
“Our design language is driven by raw materials, systemic thinking, and an emphasis on material finishes and surfaces,” Luisa and Moritz explain. By highlighting the intrinsic qualities of materials in playful yet intentional ways, Obscure Objects crafts pieces that feel both experimental and grounded. Their philosophy—rooted in constant dialogue and iterative exploration—allows ideas to evolve organically, ensuring each creation feels fresh and thoughtfully resolved.
The Chunk Stool epitomizes this philosophy. Derived from the 2021 Chunk Chair, the stool draws inspiration from the omnipresent stainless steel pipes and structures found in urban environments. “We exaggerated the scale of the components to emphasize this abundance,” they share. While the original chair prioritized sculpturality, the stool refines this balance, offering improved functionality without compromising its bold aesthetic.
To enhance the stool’s sculptural presence, details are kept minimal. The seamless merging of its parts and an evenly hand-brushed stainless steel finish create a cohesive and striking surface. Stainless steel was chosen for its durability, graceful aging, and environmental benefits—its infinite lifecycle aligns with Obscure Objects’ commitment to sustainable practices.
The construction process for the Chunk Stool is deceptively complex. “The simplicity of the final object belies the craftsmanship required,” they note. Laser-cut parts are meticulously welded and sanded by skilled artisans, with seams disappearing into the unified, brushed finish. This labor-intensive process underscores the studio’s dedication to precision and quality, elevating the stool from a functional object to a sculptural centerpiece.
