“OBJEKTE UNSERER TAGE started in 2015 with a clear vision: to create space for a self-determined generation,” says Christoph Steiger, co-founder of OBJEKTE UNSERER TAGE (OUT). “Our goal has always been to design objects with real substance—pieces that not only meet the needs of our time but also hold emotional and practical value.” For Reinhard Weßling, Managing Partner, the brand is rooted in the tradition of German design, but what truly drives OUT is “looking forward with curiosity and passion.” And while the brand remains fully independent, it’s precisely this freedom that allows them to continue exploring new ideas, materials, and technologies while ensuring that “the process stays fun and bold.”
OUT is deeply tied to its Berlin roots, with the city’s unique energy seeping into every design. “Berlin is a melting pot and a place to have some real fun—and we fully embrace that vibe,” explains Reinhard. It’s not surprising, then, that he and co-founder Christoph first met in one of Berlin’s legendary techno clubs. “I won’t name-drop it here, though—it’s not as hot as it used to be if you live in Berlin! But give us a call if you need some up-to-date addresses,” adds Reinhard, laughing. The city’s extremes—long, dark winters and exuberant summers—are reflected in their collections. “Winters are honestly just a nightmare, so all you need is a thick blanket, playful colors, and a fluffy sofa to survive!” says Christoph.
At the same time, OUT is serious about its craft. “Everything is produced locally and fairly in Germany in collaboration with family-owned businesses,” says David Wendt, co-founder. Craftsmanship and sustainability, often thrown around as buzzwords in today’s design landscape, are non-negotiables for OUT. “Our production process is fundamentally different from many brands out there, especially when you take a closer look at the small print,” he adds. And as a queer-owned brand, OUT prides itself on pushing boundaries, rejecting rigid sets of rules in favor of creative freedom. “We might come across as playful and fun, but our craftsmanship is serious—everything is made in Germany with the finest materials,” emphasizes David.
While OUT doesn’t adhere to strict rules, a common thread naturally emerged over time, shaped by their experiences. “Material selection is something we never compromise on. We might come across as playful and fun, but our craftsmanship is serious—everything is made in Germany with the finest materials,” says Christoph. From solid wood tables to premium fabrics for their sofas, the brand’s commitment to quality shines through. “If you were to cut open one of our sofas, you’d see the difference compared to other brands—it’s built to last, not to be thrown away,” adds Reinhard. This attention to durability also extends to reparability, a very ‘German way of doing things,’ according to Christoph.
OUT’s Berlin location not only informs their design identity but also positions them uniquely in the market. “In a place with no major interior design giants, we have the stage to ourselves,” reflects David. OUT’s work becomes a sort of ambassador for the city, carrying Berlin’s “rich history and vibrant energy” into each piece they create.
Despite this, trends don’t dictate OUT’s creations. “We create what we feel needs to be created. Trends aren’t what drive us—our focus is on designing timeless pieces that you won’t grow tired of after just a few weeks,” says Reinhard. Customer feedback plays an essential role in shaping their offerings, especially regarding customization. “Since we work with local craftspeople, we’re able to respond quickly to requests for special dimensions, colors, or fabrics. That flexibility is a big part of what makes us unique—it’s our way of making sure the design fits you, not the other way around,” adds Christoph.
Take the FRIEDRICH Mini Mirror, for example. “Funny enough, a client suggested it!” says David. The new compact version of their iconic mirror, inspired by early 2020s architecture, packs the same character into a smaller form. “Whether you place it on a sideboard or hang it on the wall, it brings that signature OUT vibe to your space,” adds Christoph.
As for the future, Reinhard remains candid: “The future is always unpredictable for us—we like to go with the flow.” But one thing is certain: the brand is preparing for a major milestone. “Next year, we’re celebrating 10 years of OBJEKTE UNSERER TAGE, which feels surreal! But don’t expect us to become more corporate or rational any time soon. Berlin keeps us young at heart, so we’ll celebrate it the only way we know how—by throwing a great party,” concludes David.
